Label TextLanglois was one of the most renowned cabinetmakers of his time. His French style of cabinetry—with elaborate floral marquetry and gilt bronze mounts—enjoyed particular success in London at a time when war with France placed an obvious limit on the importation of French furniture and other luxury goods into England. This is one of a group of eight similar chests, four of which form a set in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace, London. The chests share a bold, architectural form, with large inverted acanthus leaf scrolls and emphatic gilt-metal mounts. The incorporation of large architectural forms is unusual for Langlois and may suggest the chests in this group were designed by an architect, the most likely candidate being William Chambers.Status
