Label TextNevinson was fascinated with the city and modern urban life. He loved cafés, dance halls, and bars, places filled with people and commotion. In this drawing, multiple figures are layered to form a montage of scenes witnessed over the course of an evening spent in a bar in Marseilles, France. The perforations on the left side indicate that this sheet was removed from a drawing pad. We can imagine the artist seated at the table in the foreground, with a sketchbook in hand, observing and portraying the scene before him (2022).Status
