Label TextThough attributed to the Tilliard workshop, these chairs would have passed through the hands of several other artisans before being sold. In 18th-century France, members of the guild of chair makers were permitted to produce unfinished woodwork, but prohibited from carving and gilding, which would have been subcontracted out. The tapestry covers would also have been added at a separate shop, where a tapissier would have worked on the stuffing and covers.Status
