Label TextLear traveled to Greece, Italy, Corsica, Egypt, the Middle East, and India during his lifetime, often creating drawings of the sites he visited. This watercolor shows the landscape of Zagori, a mountainous region in northern Greece renowned for its traditional villages and stunning nature. Lear observes the mountain scenery from a high vantage point overlooking the valley and river below. A small village nestles into the hillside at left. Two figures wearing traditional Greek clothes take in the scenery with their backs to the viewer. Rather than color or light, line was the predominant focus of Lear’s drawing technique (2022).Status
