Label TextWell-known book illustrator Thomas Stothard produced this series of portrait drawings of famous actors and actresses, shown in character from several popular productions, as illustrations for a publication on English theater. Contemporary audiences often associated the lifestyle of players, especially actresses, with worldly vice. Indeed, Elizabeth Farren was as well known for her very public affair with the Earl of Derby, who she later married, as she was for her acting skill. When extracted from their publication by diligent collectors, the prints after these drawings often reappeared in extra-illustrated books, indicating their popularity.Status
