Label TextFor his bust of Howley—who served as Archbishop of Canterbury from 1828 to 1848—the artist drew on forms from classical Antiquity including the square "herm" bust format, simple toga-like drapery, and short curls of hair. However, the downward gaze and sensitive handling of the facial features imbue this portrait with a pensive and compassionate quality.
