Label TextThough Solomon later found inspiration in classical and medieval subjects, many of his early works actively engaged with his Jewish identity. This composition depicts a scene from ancient Jewish life: a harpist accompanying the prayers of the faithful during the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot). Solomon approaches his subject with archeological accuracy—the ivory and inlay harp shown here is based on one found in Assyrian relief sculptures in the collection of the British Museum. However, the artist presents this image of remote history and enduring faith without dramatic narrative. Intricate pen work creates a scene of soft textures and gentle shadows. The downward gaze and solemn expression of the musician evoke a mood of serene reverence (2022).Status
