Label TextSt. George tramples the snarling dragon, who twists up toward his attacker. The subject derives from myth and, from the earliest days of Christianity, the saint has been venerated in both the Greek Orthodox and Roman Catholic churches. The coat-of-arms belongs to Bernardo de’ Rossi, Bishop of Treviso, for whom the artist created this work, perhaps on the bishop’s return to his hometown outside Parma, where St. George symbolized an important military order.
