DescriptionThis bust depicts Jane Braddyll (née Gale), daughter and sole heir of Matthias Gale of Catgill Hall and wife of Wilson Gale-Braddyll of Conishead Priory in Cumberland.

Label TextJane Gale married her cousin, William Gale in 1776 and both adopted the additional surname of Braddyll the same year. William was a politician and personal assistant (Groom of the Bedchamber) to King George III. Joshua Reynolds painted several portraits of the family and its members. Nollekens' sculpted image shows Jane with antique hairstyle and drapery, emphasizing her sophistication.
